Southern Forest World

Southern Forest World
Environmental Center

Southern Forest World is a museum dedicated to the history of forestry. There are many interesting artifacts. Southern Forest World has “Stuckie” the petrified dog (He’s also been on display at Ripley’s Believe It of Not).

There’s a great display about the turpentine industry that includes tools of the trade, an old still, and a display of the new method of collecting turpentine. There’s a wonderful refueling suit from the Gemini Space project, two huge dioramas of two Cypress Mill areas, and a room with a giant swamp mural and a taxidermy bear, raccoon, fox squirrel, some birds, and a sand hill habitat.

A huge cypress tree outside allows visitors to go inside (It holds as many as 17 people). You will also see an old cabbage stack train engine used to carry wood from the forest long ago. You will find an exhibit of how woods are used to create acoustic instruments. One display was built for the Smithsonian during the Bicentennial in 1976.
